I Got This
Dear Diary,
Memories are popping up to the surface, and I canât numb them away anymore even though Iâm drinking more than usual. The warm mead is not enough. What I need is love to make me feel whole again. Iâm like a feral pet that, once the hormones kick in, has to stray. Will Steve ever leave Shirleyâs arms for me? And then thereâs the unresolved issue of Carlâs motorcycle.
Getting out of Carlâs stranglehold is tricky because making enough cash to pay him back is proving difficult. This morning, I apply for a lucrative scavenging team at the mission building, but the man in charge laughs at me and says, âYou? Why should I hire you? There are plenty of experienced ex-soldiers demanding a job.â He places my application at the bottom of the stack.
As I leave the building, I wonder, how do I prove myself? Nothing comes to mind, but I donât care because today, Harry and his wife, Martha, promised to show me how to use the Pigeon Express at the aviary message facility. This is where there are cages of trained pigeons with little carriers attached to their legs. One can write a message for exorbitant prices, and the released bird will fly to its original home among the various camps. Floyd had reserved one for me.
I arrive with them and their grandbaby and sit down to write my message.
Dear Floyd and Dolores,
Iâm planning to go to Ocean Camp when I can, maybe in a month or two.
The Zoo is decent enough, but Iâm not safe here. Miss you! Love, Savannah
I let Martha use the rest of the space because Dolores is a great friend of hers. Itâs the least I can do to try to repay Harry and Martha for their kindness. We hand the note to the proprietor, and Steve enters. After checking with the message counter, he leaves empty-handed with a downtrodden expression.
Martha murmurs, âEvery day is always the same. He never gets any word about his family.â She pulls me to the window. âWatch this. Heâll meet Shirley. Itâs like clockwork. Now theyâll stride toward the back door of the Lionâs Den. I wish youâd stay away from those two. Otherwise, youâll end up getting hurt.â
I nod and force myself to pretend Steveâs relationship with Shirley doesnât bother me, but it does. Steve is funny, handsome, and gregarious. I like him because he treats me as an equal. I look at Martha with a blank expression, lower my head, and command my jealousy to remain hidden. Martha breaks my sullen mood by saying, âTime for the park.â
Harry and Martha stroll their granddaughter to the playground and I follow along. Itâs one of my favorite places because there is a huge, black statue of a gorilla. Before the turn, tourists used it as a photo opportunity, but now itâs a fun statue for the kids to climb on. The statue reminds me of better times.
I push the baby around in the stroller while Martha and Harry sit together on a park bench.
